Guwahati: Veer Lachit Sena activists arrested in kidnapping and extortion case

 

Digital Desk: In a swift and coordinated operation, officials of Dispur police station in Guwahati rescued a kidnapped man late on Sunday night and arrested eight persons allegedly involved in the abduction and extortion attempt.

The incident took place around 9:30 PM near Pratiksha Hospital at Borbari locality in Guwahati.

According to police sources, an informant identified as Ershad Khan, a resident of Goalpara, reported that his friend Rahul Mishra had been forcibly taken away by a group of 10–15 unidentified individuals, who later demanded a ransom of Rs 15–20 lakh for his release.

Acting on the tip-off, a team from Dispur police station launched an operation and managed to locate and rescue the victim from Tribeni Path, where he was being held captive.

Six suspects were apprehended on the spot.

The vehicles were searched, leading to the recovery of several incriminating items, including: two baseball bats, one hockey stick, one double-edged knife, two pepper spray canisters and six mobile handsets.

Moreover, five letters seeking financial assistance, allegedly signed by Bikash Asom of Veer Lachit Sena and one receipt book used for collecting money in the name of Veer Lachit Sena were also recovered.

Two ID cards in the name of Biraj Ballav Kalita of Veer Lachit Sena and one organizational logo of Veer Lachit Sena were also recovered.

All six arrested individuals, along with the rescued victim and seized materials, were taken to the Dispur police station for further investigation.

Later, police apprehended two more persons in connection with the case, bringing the total number of arrests to eight.

The arrested have been identified as Biswajit Doley, Injamul Hoque, Rohan Ali, Mohan Borah, Nitu Ahmed, Chinmay Dev, Riyaj Ahmed and Biraj Ballav Kalita.

Police have registered a case and initiated legal proceedings under relevant sections of the law, including kidnapping and extortion.

Senior officers said the investigation is underway to determine whether the Veer Lachit Sena name was being used to extort money or if the suspects were directly affiliated with the organization.
