Guwahati IIT students protest over fee hike
Digital Desk: Hundreds of students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati staged a massive protest on Tuesday against a sudden and steep hike in academic fees across various programs, including PhD, MTech, and BTech. The students gathered to voice their opposition to the unexpected increase, which has caused significant distress among students already struggling to meet the financial demands of their education.
The PhD semester fees have increased from Rs 34,800 to Rs 45,700, a hike of Rs 10,900. Other fees, such as gymkhana, medical, hostel rent, and electricity charges, have also been increased.
Students allege that the administration did not consult with the student body before implementing the fee hike, leading to widespread discontent.
PhD scholars, who often juggle teaching assistantships and academic duties with minimal stipends, are hit hardest by the hike. Many are forced to make tough choices between essential living expenses and continuing their education.
The administration has extended the registration deadline to July 29, 2025, but students are demanding a written assurance regarding fee relief.
Students plan to hold a 'Candle March' tonight to urge the administration to acknowledge their demands and roll back the fee hike
