Indian Citizenship to Three Till Now Under CAA – Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma
Digital Desk: Only three foreigners have received Indian citizenship in Assam thus far under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA), Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed on Wednesday.
This occurs in the midst of intense conjecture and concern that the CAA would grant citizenship to thousands of foreign nationals.
Speaking to reporters at an official event, Sarma stated, "As of right now, only three people in Assam have been granted citizenship under the CAA." He revealed that of the twelve applications the state government had received, three had been accepted and nine were still being reviewed.
"There was a huge hue and cry that 20 to 25 lakh people would get citizenship in Assam," CM added to his statement, highlighting the lack of reaction. Now that only 12 applications have been received, you determine if it is pertinent to talk about the CAA.
In August 2024, Dulon Das, a 50-year-old man who was one among the first recipients, became the first individual in Assam to obtain Indian citizenship under the modified law.
Even while the subject continues to spark intense political controversy, the implementation of the CAA in Assam looks to be significantly more limited than initially expected, with only three approvals to date.
