Journalist Dilwar Hussain Majumder granted bail
Digital Desk: Arrested Guwahati-based journalist, Dilwar Hussain Mazumdar, has been granted bail by a local court.
Dilwar Hussain was granted bail by the court of the chief judicial magistrate in Kamrup-Metro district.
However, Dilwar Hussain will have to spend tonight at the Pan Bazaar police station in Guwahati.
He will be released from the police station tomorrow morning.
Earlier in the day today, the arrested journalist was produced before the court, where the Assam police had sought five-day custody of Dilwar Hussain.
Worth mentioning here for the unfamiliar, senior journalist Dilwar Hussain Mazumdar was arrested late Tuesday night after questioning the Managing Director of Assam Cooperative Apex Bank, Dambaru Saikia, following a protest in the city against alleged corruption and irregularities.
The protest, organised by Assam Jatiya Yuva Shakti, aimed to highlight financial irregularities and alleged anomalies within the cooperative bank.
City based scribe Mazumdar, who was covering the event, confronted Saikia with tough questions, prompting the MD to invite him inside the bank premises.
However, the invitation inside the bank premises quickly turned sour, with Mazumdar alleging intimidation and forced deletion of video footage from his phone.
Other journalists were also reportedly asked to delete their recordings.
Delving into further details of the incident which has sparked furore among the Journalists fraternity in the city and the state, even as Mazumdar pointed out that multiple media houses had already covered the protest, Saikia allegedly issued a chilling warning.
Despite the ominous threat, Mazumdar's arrest was made under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita's Sections 351(2)/3(1)(r) and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 2015– charges unrelated to the corruption allegations against the bank's MD.
The unprecedented turn of events has raised concerns about the motivations behind Mazumdar's arrest and the apparent attempt to silence him and muzzle the voice of the Press in Assam.
The incident in the meanwhile has sparked outrage among journalists and activists, who are demanding transparency and accountability into the matter.
Arrested senior journalist Dilwar Hussain Mazumdar has been produced before court.
