Key Border Issue Talks discussed by Assam-Meghalaya CM’s in Guwahati

Digital Desk: On August 16, Chief Ministers Himanta Biswa Sarma and Conrad K. Sangma met in Guwahati to discuss a number of topics related to the ongoing border disputes between Assam and Meghalaya.

"Today, in Guwahati, I had an excellent discussion with the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya Shri @SangmaConrad Ji," said CM Sarma, who was hosting the meeting on X.

Furthermore, at their most recent meeting on June 2, the two CMs decided to build border pillars by Independence Day in five of the twelve disputed areas.

Sarma added, "We discussed a wide gamut of issues to strengthen the mutual growth of both our sister states."

However, Sarma did not go into detail about the topics that the chief ministers of the two neighboring states had discussed.

The deputy commissioners of both states were supposed to discuss the issue after it was determined that border pillars should be built in five locations rather than the sixth at Pilingata due to some "difference of interpretation."

Twelve sections of the 884.9-kilometer border are disputed as a result of Meghalaya, a separate state from Assam, contesting the Assam Reorganisation Act, 1971. Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, made settling these conflicts a top priority. In August 2021, three regional committees were formed to deal with the problems.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed in March 2022 to resolve disagreements in six of the twelve areas after the recommendations were presented to Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi.
