Manipur: Arambai Tenggol announces 10-day bandh after leader's arrest
Digital Desk: The violent protest that broke out on the evening of May 7 after the arrest of its leader prompted Meitei group Arambai Tenggol to declare a 10-day bandh on June 8.
Authorities in five valley districts—Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching—have suspended internet and mobile data services, including VSAT and VPN connections, as a result of the protest, which has caused new tension in the state.
The purpose of the suspension is to stop provocative and false content from spreading on social media.
These five districts have also been subject to prohibition orders, with Bishnupur district enforcing a complete curfew.
Many protesters were hurt during the citywide demonstrations that followed the May 7 tragedy.
Protesters in Imphal West, mainly in Kwakeithel and Uripok, torched tires and furniture to block roads while demanding the release of Arambai Tenggol's leader.
A few protesters attempted self-immolation in opposition of the central government's measures.
Security officers replied with tear gas shells, disrupting traffic and sparking fear among people. Protests brought parts of the city to a halt.
