Manipur: JAC calls off bandh after RIMS assures probe into death of patient

Digital Desk: The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has launched an internal enquiry into the death of a 52-year-old patient, Hijam Ibemcha, who passed away on August 19 while preparing for a scheduled knee surgery.

She had been admitted to the hospital on August 14 with a bone fracture in her right leg and was due to undergo an Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) procedure on the day of her death.

Following her sudden demise, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in connection with the incident enforced an indefinite bandh at Sekmai along the Imphal-Dimapur Road.

However, the bandh was suspended yesterday after RIMS authorities and JAC representatives reached an understanding.

Despite the temporary suspension, the JAC warned that the agitation would resume if their demands are not fulfilled.

Hospital authorities have expressed their condolences to the bereaved family and assured full cooperation with the ongoing investigations.

An autopsy is likely to be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

RIMS has reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability, stating that all necessary steps will be taken based on the findings of the internal inquiry.
