Manipur violence, tariff reductions take centre stage in Lok Sabha; Congress MPs Gaurav Gogoi move adjournment motions

Digital Desk: The main opposition party, Congress, sought adjournment motions in the Lok Sabha on Monday, citing ongoing violence in Manipur and the tariff reductions implemented by the administration, as claimed by US President Trump.

Gaurav Gogoi, a Congress MP from Jorhat, has sought an adjournment motion to debate the deteriorating law and order situation in Manipur, which is under the President's rule and thus directly under Union Government administration.

Gogoi's adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha read, "Violence continues in Manipur, with the latest incident culminating in the death of a protestor and a shutdown declared by Kuki groups. The use of live ammunition by security officers has heightened tensions and highlighted the government's incapacity to restore order. The ongoing ethnic conflict has disturbed daily life, exacerbated communal distrust, and constituted a serious threat to stability. The deteriorating law and order situation calls for immediate involvement and a coherent strategy to prevent further loss of life and property."

Congress MP Manish Tewari has filed an adjournment petition seeking transparency about India's stated reduction in agricultural tariffs, as claimed by US President Donald Trump.

Tewari contends that while improving commercial relations with the United States is a fair goal, such concessions must respect India's economic interests and strategic sovereignty. He believes the conditions surrounding these promises create issues.

"It is imperative that the Government clarifies the rationale behind these tariff reductions, particularly in agriculture and other critical sectors such as electric vehicles, and ensures that such measures do not unduly benefit foreign industries at the expense of domestic enterprises," according to Tewari's motion to adjourn.

Tewari further added to his statement, "Transparency in trade negotiations is essential to protect national economic interests and to maintain a balanced approach towards international commitments."
