Digital Desk: Martyrs' Day is observed annually on January 30 to commemorate the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi was killed in New Delhi's Birla House compound in 1948, right before one of his regular multi-faith prayer services.
According to folklore, Gandhi's last words were, "Hey Ram." Nathuram Godse, a Hindu Mahasabha member who disagreed with Gandhi over India's division, shot him three times.
On this day, leaders, government representatives, and residents gather at Delhi's Raj Ghat to worship in memory of Mahatma Gandhi.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also commemorated Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary, stating on x, "Pujya Bapu's ideals will continue to guide us in our quest to ensure development for all."
"On Gandhi Smriti Diwas, I pay my tributes to the Father of the Nation," CM Sarma further stated.
Martyrs' Day emphasizes the value of freedom, patriotism, and the nation's sincere gratitude to those who fought for its independence.
