Meghalaya signs MoU to merge Garo, Khasi languages in Bhasini platform
Digital Desk: The Meghalaya Government, along with the Center's Digital India Bhashini Division, has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to incorporate the Garo and Khasi languages of the state onto the platform.
The Bhashini platform offers smooth access to government services in 22 languages, thereby removing linguistic barriers.
Attending the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma declared that this was a historic milestone in the direction of linguistic inclusivity.
The addition of the Garo and Khasi languages allows Meghalaya to become one of the few states that have made their native tongues available online throughout the country
"This initiative would transform how government departments communicate and connect with citizens, provide new opportunities for businesses, and contribute to more inclusive and effective governance," stated CM Conrad Sangma.
"I encourage everyone to use technology to forward job creation, innovation, and entrepreneurship," added CM Sangma.
As part of the initial implementation, DP Wahlang, Chief Secretary, has established a State Language Mission for Bhashini.
According to an official statement, the mission will ensure the seamless integration, study, and ongoing development of digital resources for Garo and Khasi languages, including the adoption of specific alphabets and dialectical peculiarities.
Amitabh Nag, CEO of Digital India Bhashini Division, and Pravin Bakshi, Commissioner Secretary of the IT Department, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to implement the project in the state.
Meghalaya has been seeking that the two languages, Khasi and Garo, be acknowledged as national languages under the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
