Mizoram: Liquor Prohibition (A) Bill Passed
Digital Desk: The Mizoram Assembly passed the Mizoram Liquor Prohibition Amendment Bill 2025 after a full day of heated debate.
The bill, introduced by Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department Minister Lal-ghing-lova Hmar, seeks to amend the Mizoram Liquor Prohibition Act 2019 by introducing new regulations on alcohol production, distribution, and enforcement.
The ruling Zoram People's Movement government defended the bill, arguing that legalizing local fruit beer and wine production would benefit Mizoram’s farmers and entrepreneurs while ensuring that prohibition remains enforced for distilled liquors.
The Mizoram government also stressed that the amendments would help curb the illegal liquor trade, generate revenue, and regulate alcohol consumption more effectively.
However, the opposition strongly opposed the bill, demanding total prohibition, especially in a Christian-majority state like Mizoram.
Opposition members argued that any form of alcohol legalization goes against the moral and religious values of the state.
They also raised concerns that allowing alcohol production could weaken prohibition laws and lead to an increase in social problems such as alcohol abuse.
As tensions escalated, the opposition staged a walkout in the evening, protesting the government's decision.
Despite their absence, the bill was put to a vote and passed.
