Mizoram Government to use tankers to address water crisis

Digital Desk: The Mizoram government has introduced a water tanker service to address the severe water shortage in Lunglei town, which has been experiencing an acute crisis since March.

The primary water source, the Tlawng River, has dried up significantly due to an extended dry spell, prompting the government to take drastic measures.

The government will ferry water from the Mat River, located between Zobawk in Lunglei district and Hnahthial town.

The water will be distributed within the Lunglei Municipal Council starting Saturday, in collaboration with the Lunglei Truck Owners' Association.

Notably, the daily water requirement for Lunglei stands at 3.5 million liters, while the current pumping capacity from the Tlawng River is only 1.5 million liters per day.

Approximately 80,000 residents and over 16,000 water tap connections are affected in Lunglei and its surrounding areas.

Residents have been collecting water from streams, borewells, and 90 traditional waterholes.

The government is constructing a concrete gravity dam on the Tlawng River to improve water security in the area. If completed on time, the dam is expected to mitigate future water shortages.
