Move against Assam University professor over alleged 'caste' remarks; complaint lodged

Digital Desk: A complaint has been made against Professor Mahmood Ansari of Assam University's Economics Department in Silchar for reportedly engaging in verbal abuse, caste-based discrimination, and issuing threats to workers performing maintenance work for a contractor.

According to sources, the incident occurred on March 12, 2025, at Professor Ansari's official residence, where workers had arrived to complete their tasks under the Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) managed by Rajashree Dev (contractor).

According to the complaint, Professor Ansari responded strongly to the 10-minute delay by cursing insulting words at the workers, including degrading remarks like "Gandi nali ke kire ho, unpar gawar." Assam me hi sare chutiye milte haev; bahar asa nahi hota. Barak Valley me sare murkh log haey."

Furthermore, he allegedly attacked Rupak Mala, a Scheduled Caste (SC) worker, saying, "You are bloody low caste (SC), you are like a swine."

The workers reportedly accused Professor Ansari of keeping them on his property, unleashing his dog to scare them, and issuing physical threats. He allegedly threatened to teach them a "lifetime lesson" while continuously making derogatory remarks against the residents of Barak Valley.

On March 13, the workers reported the unlikely scenario to their contractor, who then filed a complaint with the Assam University administration.

Despite this, two weeks have passed with no action or investigation. To achieve justice, the workers have filed an FIR under the IPC and SC/ST Acts, as well as an expedient investigation and strict legal action against Professor Ansari.

They exhibit faith in the legal system and call on law enforcement to intervene in a serious case of abuse and prejudice.
