Digital Desk: In a historic ruling, the Dhemaji District and Sessions Court on Thursday condemned Rintu Sharma to death for the heinous killing of Nandita Saikia, a college student.
Moridhal College student Nandita was killed on August 21, 2021, in a horrifying incident where the convict attacked her classmate, Kashmina Dutta, and Kashmina's father, Deba Dutta, seriously injuring both of them.
Case No. 397/2021 was filed at the Dhemaji Police Station and was tried for four years. Forty-one witnesses testified in court during this time. Sharma was found guilty by the Sessions Court in accordance with Sections 342, 326, 307, and 302 of the Indian Penal Code after a careful review of the evidence and depositions.
A thorough 400-page chargesheet had previously been filed by the police against the defendant. For Nandita's family and the survivors, the verdict, which handed down the death sentence on Thursday, represents the achievement of a protracted and agonizing quest for justice.
