National Film Award-winning filmmaker Arup Barthakur passes away
Digital Desk: Arup Barthakur, the National Film Award-winning filmmaker, died at 10:40 p.m. on Monday.
For the past several months, the director has been receiving care at a private hospital in Guwahati.
Arup Barthakur's work as a documentary filmmaker garnered him particular recognition. The documentary "Notun Asha," which was produced by Beauty Sabhapandit, earned him the 1990 National Award for Best Non-Feature Film.
His documentary, "Shadow of a Marble," which is based on the life of sculptor Biren Singh, has recently won numerous accolades on a national and worldwide scale.
In 2025, he was awarded the 18th Rodali Award for his lifetime contribution to theatre. At the time of his passing, he was working on a feature film based on a story by writer Jimoni Choudhury.
It is to be mentioned that his death has caused grief in Assam’s film industry, and his last rites are scheduled to be performed at Bashistha Crematorium on Tuesday.
