No calls, emails after work: India Moves Towards Work-Life Balance with Right to Disconnect Bill in Lok Sabha

Digital Desk: The Lok Sabha passed a private member's bill on Friday that would allow workers to ignore work-related calls and emails after hours.

Members of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha can introduce bills on matters they believe call for legislative action. However, private member bills are typically withdrawn following the government's response to the proposed legislation.

The "Right to Disconnect Bill, 2025," introduced by NCP MP Supriya Sule, aims to create an Employees' Welfare Authority. According to the bill, every employee would have the option to unplug from work-related calls and emails on holidays and after official business hours.

It also covers related issues and contains clauses that permit employees to decline to reply to such communications.

In addition, the Indian Parliament recently received a number of private member bills.

Congress MP Kadiyam Kavya introduced the Menstrual Benefits Bill, which seeks to give women legal benefits and assistance at work while they are menstruating.

The proposal from LJP MP Shambhavi Choudhary centers on ensuring that female students and working women have access to hygienic facilities and paid menstrual leave.

In response to the Tamil Nadu government's Supreme Court appeal following the denial of presidential assent for a related law, Congress MP Manickam Tagore introduced a bill to exempt Tamil Nadu from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for medical admissions.

Despite previous opposition from the government, DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi introduced a bill to abolish the death penalty in India. In order to protect journalists and their property from violence, Independent MP Vishaldada Prakashbapu Patil proposed the Journalist (Prevention of Violence and Protection) Bill, 2024.
