Rekha Gupta sworn in as Delhi Chief Minister
Digital desk: Rekha Gupta, a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA-elect, was sworn in as Delhi's fourth woman chief minister on Thursday at Ramlila Ground. After 27 years, the BJP formed the Delhi government, winning 48 seats in the 70-member legislative assembly.
In addition, BJP MLAs Pankaj Kumar Singh, Ashish Sood, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Raviraj Indraj Singh, Kapil Mishra, and Parvesh Verma took the oath of office as ministers.
According to Rekha Gupta, the first fraction of ₹2,500 monthly income support for women under the Mahila Samridhi Yojana will be credited to their bank accounts by March 8.
On Wednesday, the wait for Delhi's next chief minister was finally over. At a key meeting, the BJP MLAs elected Rekha Gupta (50) as the party's leader. She met with Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and staked her claim to lead the next administration.
Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party chastised the BJP for the delay in announcing the name, urging the party to shift its focus to law and order issues after electing its chief minister.
The oath taking ceremony started at 11 a.m. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena administered the oaths of office and secrecy to the new chief minister.
The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda, as well as several BJP chief ministers and party officials.
The BJP has invited around 30,000 guests, including prominent RSS officials and spiritual Dharm Gurus.
Over 25,000 security personnel and 15 paramilitary units have been deployed throughout Delhi.
According to Delhi police, commandos, quick reaction teams, PCR vans, and SWAT teams have been deployed in strategic places, with snipers stationed in nearby high-rise buildings.
