Sedition case charged against Journalists Karan Thapar, Siddharth Varadarajan; get summoned by Guwahati police
Digital Desk: Senior journalists Siddharth Varadarajan and Karan Thapar have been called by the Guwahati Police in relation to a case filed on sedition charges, the notices stated.
The two journalists have been invited to appear before Guwahati Police's Crime Branch on August 22. They are both affiliated with the digital media outlet The Wire.
As per the very same summons, "It is revealed that there are reasonable grounds to question you to ascertain the facts and circumstances from you, in relation to the present investigation."
However, according to a Wire official, the summonses did not include a formal complaint or charges against the accused scribes. Regarding the case, the police have not disclosed any information. Senior police officials were repeatedly called for details, but no one answered.
Thapar received his summons on Monday, whereas Varadarajan received his on August 14. The warnings stated: "You may be arrested if you do not attend or follow the instructions of this notice."
Referring to FIR (No.: 03/2025) filed at the Crime Branch under sections 152 (acts endangering the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India), 196, 197(1)(D)/3(6), 353, 45, and 61 of the BNS, Crime Branch Inspector Soumarjyoti Ray issued the summons to appear.
