Prior to this, Gill was named ICC Player of the Month in February 2025, January 2023, and September 2023. Since the award was given for his performance in his first Test series as captain, the star batter said he treasures it more than the other four he has received.
Gill in a media release by ICC stated, “Being recognized as the July ICC Player of the Month is a wonderful feeling. Since it relates to my performances during my first Test series as captain, it has much greater meaning this time.”
Ash Gardner of Australia and Hayley Matthews, the captain of the West Indies, are the only female players to have won the monthly award four times, while Gill is the first male player to do so.
Gill was the leading run scorer in the IND vs ENG series, scoring 754 runs in ten innings at an average of 75.4. He was named Player of the Match in India's 336-run win and Player of the Series after leading India to a historic 2-2 draw in the five-match series. Gill also scored a match-saving 103 in the fourth Test at Old Trafford; all his achievements stood high to make him the ICC Player of the month.
