Tezpur University Students Raise Concerns Over VC’s Leadership and Academic Practices
Digital Desk: On Monday, the Tezpur University Students' Union held a press conference at the Guwahati Press Club, accusing Vice-Chancellor Shambhunath Singh and the university administration of autocratic behavior, negligence, and intimidation.
Speaking to the media, student representatives stated that the university administration failed to pay tribute to Zubeen Garg following his death, which they described as deeply insensitive and unworthy of a central university that has always claimed to uphold cultural and social responsibility.
The students also stated that, despite the university recently holding the Students' General Election, the management appeared unconcerned about the continued student issues and discontent on campus.
During a media session, the Students' Union accused Vice-Chancellor Shambhunath Singh of autocratic rule, noting his extended absences from school since his appointment.
They questioned the legality of his doctoral degree due to a lack of publicly available academic records and cited a court judgment against his appointment, which the Ministry of Education ignored.
They also said Singh issued threats resembling murder threats to a protesting student. The Union emphasized the lack of a report from a fact-finding committee following their 57-day demonstration, calling it an issue of accountability and transparency.
They have called for a Judicial Inquiry Commission to look into claims against Singh, such as abuse of authority, academic inconsistencies, student threats, and administrative failings.
The students alleged that the vice-chancellor's incompetence led to many female students being denied payments under the Nijut Moina scheme, causing significant hardship.
They expressed concern over Singh's academic background, noting the absence of information regarding his educational credentials or PhD research online. During the press meet, they also pointed out that even a basic internet search reveals no trace of VC's research work. The Students' Union criticized the administration for ignoring these concerns despite numerous requests and rallies on campus.
