The 'Elephant and Dragon must come together': Xi's outreach to Modi in the wake of Trump's tariffs

Digital Desk: On Sunday, President Xi Jinping stated in his opening remarks that close ties and good relations between China and India are essential during delegation-level discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in China.

At the gathering, which coincides with tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on China and India, Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that it is critical for the "dragon and the elephant to come together."

China-India diplomatic relations are celebrating their 75th anniversary this year, and Xi Jinping stressed the importance of both nations managing their relationship strategically and over the long term.

Xi Jinping said, "We must also rise to our historic responsibilities to uphold multilateralism, a multipolar world, and more democracy in international institutions and work together for peace and prosperity in Asia and around the world."

During a meeting with Xi Jinping, India's Prime Minister Modi promised to strengthen bilateral ties based on mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity.

He emphasized the connection between bilateral cooperation and the well-being of 2.8 billion people. Modi also cited peace and stability along the border following the disengagement process last year, as well as the resumption of direct flights between the two nations.

This is PM Modi's first visit to China in seven years, during which time relations between the two neighboring nations deteriorated due to border tensions, which resulted in a tragic conflict at the Galwan Valley along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh in 2020.
