Upper Assam Sizzles: Heatwave Shatters Records, Rainfall Stands Still
Digital Desk: On Thursday, Dibrugarh set a new record for the hottest month of June temperature ever measured, at 38.7 degrees Celsius, 7.2 degrees above normal. It surpassed the previous record of 38.2 degrees Celsius in 2015.
Weather officials report that several towns have recorded their highest-ever June temperatures, with daytime mercury levels crossing 40°C in some areas.
Assam witnessed extremely scant precipitation throughout the week of June. The state experienced only 16.9 mm of rainfall, compared to an average of 90.9 mm, indicating an 81% deficit. The absence of rainfall has further worsened conditions, affecting agriculture, daily life, and health.
Local authorities have issued heat advisories urging people to stay indoors during peak hours and to stay hydrated.
IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) predictions indicate that there will be some relief from this heatwave in the upcoming days.
