Uttarakhand Becomes First State to Implement Uniform Civil Code
Digital desk: In a historic decision, Uttarakhand has become India's first state to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC)The move is being hailed as a historic step towards ensuring equality and justice in personal laws, irrespective of religion, gender, or community.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami officially announced the implementation of the UCC during a press conference, stating that it reflects the aspirations of the people of Uttarakhand and aligns with the principles of the Indian Constitution.
The Uttarakhand UCC Act administers and regulates marriage and divorce laws, succession, live-in relationships, and other related issues. It establishes equal marriageable ages for men and women, divorce reasons and procedures across all religions, and prohibits polygamy and 'halala'.
The implementation follows months of deliberations and consultations with legal experts, religious leaders, and various stakeholders. A high-level committee chaired by Justice (Retd.) Ranjana Desai submitted its recommendations, which served as the foundation for the new code.
