Violent protests erupt in Baksa over Zubeen Garg's death
Digital Desk: Tensions outside the Baksa district jail in Assam spiraled out of control on Wednesday, with widespread public outrage over the Zubeen Garg death case spilling onto the streets in violent protests.
Chaos unfolded outside Baksa jail as demonstrators clashed with police in a dramatic escalation of unrest.
The situation turned volatile when security forces arrived at the jail with the key accused in the case, Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma, in custody.
Protesters attempted to block the convoy, pelting stones and setting police vehicles ablaze in an attempt to prevent their entry.
Several police personnel, including an ASP-ranked official, sustained injuries.
Several others, including law enforcement personnel and members of the media, were also injured in the violence.
Among them was video journalist Saurav Dey from NE News, who was reportedly caught in the crossfire.
An ambulance was also attacked during the violent clash that broke out in front of Baksa Jail.
The vehicle sustained damage after protesters pelted stones. In the face of mounting aggression, police were forced to respond with tear gas and a baton charge to bring the situation under control.
A senior police officer sustained injuries during the stone-pelting, and two police vehicles were set on fire by the enraged mob. Authorities have confirmed multiple injuries resulting from the violence, although exact numbers remain unverified.
To regain control of the situation, the administration deployed additional security forces to the area.
