Bengali is the second most spoken language in Asia and the fifth most spoken language globally. Bengali speakers are being imprisoned today, even though about 30 crore people speak the language.
"We all speak our mother tongue," said Chief Minister Banerjee, praising her mother tongue. For the first time, children use their mother tongue to say "Maa. But there has been an outbreak of a language war over Bengali."
Ms. Banerjee criticized the dearth of Bengali music, a jab at West Bengal's Tollywood film industry.
Where is Bengali in our songs these days? All of the music is loud and ostentatious. Bollywood is already available for that. South Indian movies are also well-liked. However, she added, "Tollywood should have more Bengali songs, not just music."
Ms. Banerjee clarified her position by stating that while she did not oppose other languages, she did emphasize the significance of Bengali preservation.
Ms. Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress brought up the Bengali language controversy during the July 21 'Shahid Dibas' (Martyrs' Day) festivities.
