Zubeen Garg's death probe under legal assistance treaty between MHA and Singapore

Digital Desk: The Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) between Singapore and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has been formally enacted in relation to the FIR filed by Assam Police regarding the premature death of singer Zubeen Garg.

A request for Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) was sent to the High Commission of India in Singapore by the MHA's IS-II Division/Legal Cell on September 30, 2025. The request sought legal assistance from the Republic of Singapore in the investigation of Case FIR 18/2025.

Under Secretary Parveen Singh signed the request, which was sent to T. Prabhakar, First Secretary (Commerce) at the Indian High Commission in Singapore.

The Attorney General of Singapore is the Central Authority for such matters, and the Ministry has requested that the mission forward the original MLA request to him.

For the purpose of necessary coordination and follow-up, copies of the MLA request have also been distributed to the Ministry of External Affairs, the Assam Home Department, the Assam Police Headquarters, the CID, and the CBI.

The action was taken while the Assam Police are still looking into what happened when Garg died in Singapore earlier this year.

It is anticipated that the MLAT route will make it easier to gather testimony and important evidence under Singaporean jurisdiction, which is necessary to advance the investigation in India.
