Assam: Ex-Lover Arrested in High-Profile Cyber Defamation Case Involving Archita Phukan

Digital Desk: The arrest of Tinsukia-based prime accused Pratim Bora by Dibrugarh Police marks a significant development in the well-known cyber defamation case involving Archita Phukan. Using sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) tools, Bora's ex-girlfriend Archita Phukan allegedly shared distorted and graphic pictures of her on various social media sites.

The false accusations made in these defamatory contents claimed that Archita was living in the United States and that she was involved in pornographic activities. Police have confirmed that these allegations were completely untrue and intended to damage her reputation following a personal break.

After Archita, a Dibrugarh resident, filed a First Information Report, the case was registered under Dib PS Case No. 234/25. During their investigation, police also discovered that Bora had created manicured images using platforms like Desire AI, Midjourney AI, and OpenArt AI. In order to introduce content anonymously, he also made fake social media and Gmail accounts.

Bora has been charged with cyber harassment, defamation, obscenity, and privacy infringement under sections 336(4), 356(2), 74, 75, 294, and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). After being placed under police custody, Bora will be brought to court, where the police will ask that he be remanded for seven days so that he can be cross-questioned and have his digital evidence recovered.

Speaking to the media, SP-in-charge Sizal Agarwal stated that AI was employed in the creation of the images and that data was sought by several tech platforms to aid the investigation. She further warned that anyone caught sharing, forwarding, or commenting abusively on the transformed information, even if they are aware of the truth, will face legal consequences.

The case highlights the negative impact of AI usage and underscores the need for digital accountability, urging public intervention and promoting sensitivity in online information dissemination.
