Assam Govt. commemorates 100 years of 'Bard of the Brahmaputra'- observes centenary celebrations of Bhupen Hazarika
Digital Desk: On September 8, the Assam government started off the year-long birth centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, with Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paying honours to the great singer, composer, and cultural icon.
The inaugural event was held at Guwah's Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Samannay Kshetra. At his memorial, both the governor and the chief minister paid floral tributes.
As part of the celebration, 100 renowned people raised a flag in his honour, followed by a musical tribute to his timeless legacy.
Bhupen Hazarika, also known as "Sudhakantha" (the Bard of the Brahmaputra), was born on September 8, 1926, in Sadiya, Tinsukia district. His music, profoundly steeped in Assamese cultural ethos, crossed borders and languages, uniting people around common themes of humanity, justice, and empathy.
Furthermore, Hazarika's only son, Tez Hazarika, visited from the United States with his wife and son to take part in the centenary celebration.
Taking such a notable day remembrance, Assam CM Sarma posted on X, stating, "We celebrate the life of a legend who carried Assam to the world through his soulful melodies and made humanity his tune and love his anthem."

Additionally, the maestro's younger brother, Samar Hazarika, expressed gratitude to the state government for taking the initiative to commemorate his brother's centenary in such an amazing way.
In addition, the maestro himself established the Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Trust, which hosted events at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati, such as musical performances and the ceremonial lamp lighting in front of his museum.
