Assam NICU infant death row: five GMCH staff suspended and 2 PG trainees rusticated

Digital Desk: Following the death of a four-day-old infant in the NICU on August 18, the Assam government rusticated two postgraduate trainees from Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and suspended seven employees, including senior physicians, for six months each.

Senior physicians Dr. Anupama Deka and Dr. Dipankar Hazarika, Dr. Puja, Nurse-in-Charge Gomti Devi, ICU technician Ishanjyoti Talukdar, and staff nurse Chandana Nath are among the members who have been suspended for a period of six months.

Furthermore, Dr. Hrishikesh Thakuria, a second-year postgraduate trainee in the Department of Paediatrics, and Dr. Pooja, a first-year trainee, have been rusticated for six months. Additionally, the decision was upheld by Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS), citing an inquiry report of grave misconduct, dereliction of duty, and hospital records tampering.

The staff received citations for serious misconduct, poor record-keeping, deceiving the investigation, and attempting to falsify hospital records. The goal of these measures is to ensure patient safety and accountability in critical care facilities.

Prior to the inspection of the hospital, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had confirmed the incident's negligence and promised that those responsible would face harsh consequences.
