Assam government orders Transfer to Dhubri SP Leena Doley following lathi-charge incident at Golakganj
Digital Desk: In response to the lathi-charge incident on protesters at Golakganj, the Assam government has directed that Dhubri Superintendent of Police (SP), Leena Doley, be transferred to Assam Police Headquarters, Ulubari, Guwahati.
The action was taken as a disciplinary measure in response to public outcry over police treatment of protesters calling for the Koch-Rajbongshi community to be recognized as a Scheduled Tribe (ST).
Doley has been placed at headquarters "in the interest of public service" until further directives, per a formal notification signed by Commissioner & Secretary Biswajit Pegu and issued by the Home and Political Department.
The additional duty of Dhubri SP has been assigned to Debasish Borah, Commandant of the 4th APBN, Kahilipara, Guwahati, in her place, pending further directives.
On September 10, hundreds of All Koch-Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) members protested in Golakganj, demanding Scheduled Tribe recognition for the Koch-Rajbongshi community. The protest escalated, resulting in a police lathi-charge that injured over a hundred participants.
A notification was circulated on September 18 and has been sent to senior police officials, including the Director General of Police, Inspector General of Police, and the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati.
