Heavy rain, landslides hit Darjeeling; 11 dead till now, roads blocked after bridges collapse
Digital Desk: In West Bengal's Darjeeling district, a landslide hit Mirik, resulting in at least 11 fatalities and eight injuries. Another bridge that has fallen is the Dudia Iron Bridge, which links the district towns and popular tourist destinations of Kurseong and Mirik.
Hussain Khola, which is located along National Highway 110 close to Kurseong and cuts off the connection between Siliguri and Darjeeling, has also reported experiencing a landslide brought on by intense rain.
Meanwhile, the Teesta River's rising water levels after intense rain have forced the closure of NH 10, which connects Siliguri and Sikkim.
Three teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been sent to the Mirik area in the Darjeeling subdivision of West Bengal, where heavy rains have caused extensive destruction and enormous landslides. The teams are from the Darjeeling, Siliguri, and Alipurduar areas.
In its bulletin, the IMD added that the neighboring district of Alipurduar in North Bengal, which is adjacent to Darjeeling, would see heavy rains through Monday morning.
A sizable portion of the neighboring district of Jalpaiguri's Malbazar has been underwater as a result of the hill districts' continuous nighttime rainfall.
Flooding is occurring as a result of the Teesta, Mal, and other hill rivers' water levels being significantly higher than the danger threshold.
