Meghalaya seeks major power boost Transmission overhaul; urges Rs. 2270 Cr for power projects

Digital Desk: The Meghalaya government has formally urged the Central Electricity Authority to approve the construction of 132-kilo-volt power transmission lines in Baghmara and other border towns of the state along the Indo-Bangladesh border.

Meghalaya Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal confirmed the move, stating that the establishment of high-voltage power lines in the region would play a crucial role in meeting the electricity demands of border communities and also serve broader strategic interests.

The Meghalaya government has expressed hope that the CEA will expedite the necessary clearances to begin work on the project at the earliest.

Getting approved by the Central Electricity Authority, the plan is to expand 220 kV and 132 kV transmission lines by 1,090 circuit kilometers and increase transformation capacity by 760 MVA.

The viability of the plan is viewed as critical to Meghalaya's goal of solving power shortages, modernizing its grid, and providing reliable electricity to even the most remote areas.

A dedicated 132 kV line would bypass these barriers, allowing for a more stable and secure power supply to frontier areas, according to Mondal.

Mondal also stated that the government has secured land for a 132 kV substation in Nongpoh, which will likely fix transmission troubles while strengthening supply regularity for citizens in the Ri-Bhoi district.

Mondal further stated that the government intends to introduce similar high-capacity lines to the South West Khasi Hills and West Khasi Hills regions, which include Mawkyrwat and other towns.
