Justice Joymalya Bagchi sworn in as SC Judge

Digital Desk: On Monday, March 17, Justice Joymalya Bagchi was sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court of India, marking a momentous occasion. In a full court ceremony held in the first court, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna delivered the oath to Justice Bagchi.

Justice Bagchi's appointment was approved by the Union on March 10, 2025, following his recommendation by the Collegiums on March 6, 2025. The Collegiums considered his elevation to the Supreme Court, taking into account the fact that no judge from the Calcutta High Court had become the Chief Justice of India since Justice Altamas Kabir's retirement in 2013.

With his appointment, Justice Bagchi is poised to become the Chief Justice of India in 2031, following the retirement of Justice K.V. Viswanathan on May 25, 2031. He will have tenure of more than six years before assuming the office of CJI, making him one of the longest-serving judges in the Supreme Court.
