Notice issued to Assam Govt. over detention of a journalist
Digital Desk: On Thursday (April 3, 2025), the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) sent a notification to the Assam government regarding the imprisonment of a journalist covering a protest over alleged financial irregularities in a bank in Guwahati.
According to reports, the journalist, who works for a digital news portal, was seized while covering a demonstration outside the Assam Cooperative Apex Bank Ltd.
Protesters demanded an in-depth inquiry into alleged financial irregularities in the bank's management, in addition to heavy penalties for anyone guilty. To investigate the protestors' charges, the journalist allegedly questioned the bank's Managing Director.
According to the reports, no cause was given for his imprisonment.
Observing that the incarceration raises the issue of infringement of the journalist's human rights, it issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Government of Assam, requesting a detailed report on the subject within four weeks.
