Supreme Court slammed Assam Govt for keeping people in detention centre, "Can't keep forever"

Digital Desk: On Tuesday, the Supreme Court slammed the Assam government and the Centre for failing to extradite persons who had been deemed foreigners and locking them down in detention camps indefinitely.

The Supreme Court asked the Assam government whether it was waiting for a "mahurat (auspicious time)" and ordered the restitution of 63 persons held in detention centers within two weeks.

The Supreme Court ruled, "Indefinite prison in detention centers undermines fundamental rights"; persons cannot be held in detention camps forever.
